DII lacrosse championship semifinals, team by team
Adelphi. The Panthers were arguably the team of the 90s, winning four of the national championships played during that span. The championship well went dry for 23 years, but Adelphi ended its drought winning the national championship in 2024, its eighth.
Adelphi is loaded with talent on both sides, being the only team remaining that has a top-five scoring offense and top-five scoring defense in DII. The Panthers face off against Saint Anselm in a rematch of last year's national semifinals. The two faced off just a couple weeks prior in the NE10 championship game, where Adelphi won 13-12. A repeat here would cement their status as powerhouse once again. Braden Donnellan is currently the DII points leader with 5.83 per game and is second in assists with 3.78 per game. Also, keep an eye on Noah Gibson, the NE10 goals scored leader who is sixth in DII with 3.44 goals per game.
Maryville (MO). The Saints are the only Cinderella of the bunch, upsetting Limestone in overtime with just 25 seconds remaining on the clock. The go-ahead goal from Justin Simonson put Maryville, the No. 6 seed, into the semifinals and on the road to face undefeated Tampa. The win, the Saints' 14th of the year, set a program record.
Simonson has been the hero for Maryville aplenty this year. He leads the team in goals (39), assists (42) and points (81). Backing him up, John Chorlton was named GLVC defensive player of the year for the best scoring defense in the GLVC during the regular season.
Saint Anselm. The Hawks are no strangers to the DII men's lacrosse championship. They have made every tournament since 2021. What they are strangers to is the national championship game 鈥 a place they have never been. Set up for a rematch against Adelphi, the Hawks are looking to break through and make program history... again.
Like Maryville, Saint Anselm's 14 wins are a single-season record. While the Hawks dropped last year's semifinals and this year's NE10 championship game to Adelphi, they did defeat the Panthers 鈥 one of five nationally ranked victories in their undefeated regular season 鈥 for the first time in program history. Matt Lemay earned NE10 rookie of the year honors, leading the team in goals (39) and points (51).
Tampa. The Spartans enter the game 20-0 鈥 and the last time Tampa won back in 2022, it finished a perfect 21-0. Tampa defeated Rollins for its ninth Sunshine State Conference title in program history. As a team, the Spartans have a top-five scoring defense and a top-10 scoring margin, balancing sharp shooting with lockdown D.
Ryan Kemp was named the SSC player of the year, pacing the team with 63 points on 42 goals and 21 assists. Ryan Bashaw and Davis Lindsey are also not afraid to get it in net and add to the Spartans' barrage. The offense does more than enough to keep Connor Theriault safe in goal 鈥 he's made 207 saves with a 7.44 goals against average. The Spartans have won by at least three goals in all but one game since March 1 鈥 a run which included five victories over nationally ranked teams.
