OMAHA, Neb. 鈥 OK fate, we get the point. You like Mississippi State. No, you love Mississippi State, bananas and all. At least right now.
Let us count the ways Tuesday morning at TD Ameritrade Park.
The Bulldogs show up to play surging North Carolina in a College World Series winner鈥檚 bracket game that had been postponed from the night before. It鈥檚 raining. It鈥檚 supposed to do that much of the day. Flash flood warnings have been issued.
But the skies brighten, and the sun comes out.
The Tar Heels are on a roll, having gone 6-0 in the postseason and losing twice in the past 37 days 鈥 by a combined three runs.

But the Bulldogs steamroll them 12-2. The same Bulldogs who have three walk-off wins in the postseason.
North Carolina has averaged nine runs its first six 草莓网站在线看 Tournament games. Against those loud bats, Mississippi State sends out a starting pitcher who hasn鈥檛 won a game since April 7.
But Konnor Pilkington allows the Tar Heels only two runs in six-plus innings.
And then there鈥檚 the real punch line. At bat with the bases loaded in the second inning is a Bulldog freshman batting ninth, whose only home run in college came two months ago.

But Jordan Westburg hits a hanging slider halfway to Iowa for a grand slam. In the eighth, he鈥檚 back again with the bases loaded, and clears them with a double. That鈥檚 seven RBI from a guy with a .243 batting average, to tie a College World Series record that was last matched 17 years ago.
鈥淥bviously a day he and his family will remember forever,鈥 coach Gary Henderson called it.
鈥滼ust with the way the season went, it鈥檚 kind of hard to imagine,鈥 Westburg said afterward. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a moment that every ball player wants to go through.
鈥淛ust to do this was over the top.鈥
Yeah, fate. You鈥檙e in maroon at the moment.

鈥淗onestly this is just the beginning of something,鈥 the Bulldogs鈥 Elijah MacNamee was saying after the game. 鈥淚 know the College World Series is the last place you go but I feel like we鈥檙e just getting started. It just keeps going up and up and up. It鈥檚 a roller coaster and we鈥檙e definitely climbing.鈥
By the way, that鈥檚 Jordan Westburg, the banana guy. His dugout antics 鈥 such as making a call on a banana during a regional game that was picked up on television 鈥 are what turned the fruit into the symbol of Mississippi State magic. Bananas 鈥 inflatable, plastic, real 鈥 have become a common sight in the Bulldogs鈥 fan section. Chiquita and Dole have fought to offer congratulations. Chiquita was first, but Westburg mentioned there were Dole bananas at the hotel Tuesday morning. 鈥淎 battle in corporate America,鈥 he called it.
It鈥檚 one of those unfathomable fads that can explode in sport with no rational explanation. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 imagine that in the slightest, how it blew up,鈥 he said. The team has one on the bench every game for luck. Guess who picks it?
鈥淚 go through the selection process,鈥 Westburg said. 鈥淵ou want the ripest one, but sometimes you can鈥檛 be too picky. I think I鈥檒l keep this banana today. It鈥檚 a special one.鈥
But using fruit as a good luck charm is one thing. Driving in seven runs is another.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e going to do all the shenanigans in the dugout,鈥 Westburg said, 鈥測ou have to step it up on the field and back that up.鈥

It hasn鈥檛 all been milk and honey and bananas for Westburg this season. He鈥檚 had injuries and tough days dealing with tough days, and needed to make some adjustments in approach. 鈥淗e and I have had those very, very specific conversations five or six times,鈥 Henderson said.
So the coach doesn鈥檛 mind banana-mania.
"This is definitely the best banana ever."

鈥淵ou need to be able to let these guys have some fun. They鈥檝e got to be able to do that. He鈥檚 got to be able to make the phone call on the banana, right? You鈥檝e got to be able to do those things and (then) become somebody different when you鈥檙e in the box.
鈥淗e鈥檚 an intense kid. Super intense. He鈥檚 not a goofball.鈥
Added MacNamee, 鈥淗e deserves it. The kid works harder than anyone I鈥檝e ever seen. I know how hard he鈥檚 been working in the cage. This morning everyone knew. We had a different vibe from him.鈥
He certainly made a mess of the Tar Heels鈥 morning, and they never saw him coming.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know who hit it, but I just hung a breaking ball over the plate,鈥 North Carolina pitcher Austin Bergner said. He retired the next 16 batters in a row on 51 pitches, but he understood the damage had been done by whoever it was.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 the great thing about college baseball,鈥 said Tar Heels coach Mike Fox, who would have preferred it not happen to him. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what you get here, you get guys you don鈥檛 expect.鈥
Westburg couldn鈥檛 quite comprehend just what he had done Tuesday. 鈥淩ight now, not really. I鈥檓 sure when everything settles down tonight and I鈥檓 just laying in bed and thinking about it, it鈥檒l be something that鈥檚 really special.鈥
But Mississippi State has been doing a lot of that lately, as teams with good karma will.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 the beauty of it,鈥 second baseman Hunter Stovall said. 鈥淲e never know. It鈥檚 a different person almost every day. It鈥檚 been awesome to watch, it鈥檚 been awesome to be a part of, it鈥檚 been awesome to be in the shoes of that person.
鈥淏ut we鈥檝e got to finish this.鈥
The good news: Omaha is not out of bananas.
