Coastal Carolina takes Game 1️⃣ | FINAL: COASTAL 7, ARIZONA 4

Coastal Carolina baseball

Coastal Carolina took down Arizona in the opening game of the 2025 Men's College World Series, beating Arizona 7-4, in the rematch of the 2016 MCWS championship. The win moved the Chanticleers to the winners' bracket and handed them their 24th straight win.

The game lived up to the nine-year hiatus hype, going back and forth with the three lead changes. Coastal Carolina opened up the scoring with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single in the second from center fielder Wells Sykes, and Arizona tied it in the fourth with a solo home run from shortstop Mason White and back-to-back doubles.

The Chanticleers took the lead again in the fifth with another RBI single, but the Wildcats answered back in the top of the sixth with two runs to take a 4-3 lead.

Coastal tied it again in the bottom of the sixth, and the teams stayed locked at four until the bottom of the eighth. The Chanticleers took the final lead with a two-out rally, ripping back-to-back RBIs from left fielder Sebastian Alexander and second baseman Blake Barthol to take a 7-4 lead entering the final frame.

The Wildcats threatened in the top of the ninth with two baserunners, but left-hander Dominick Carbone shut the door with a strikeout and forcing a game-ending double play.

Arizona will play in the loser of Louisville/Oregon State on Sunday in the elimination bracket. Coastal Carolina will face the winner of that contest with a trip to the MCWS semifinals on the line.

🤯 CHANTS TAKE THREE-RUN LEAD | Bot 8: COASTAL 7, ARIZONA 4

Two outs for Coastal Carolina? No problem.

The Chanticleers took a 7-4 lead with consecutive RBI hits from Sebastian Alexander and Blake Barthol.

Wells Sykes started the two-out rally with a lofty double into right field, falling inches away from the right field line. Arizona intentionally walked Caden Bodine to bring up Alexander, who had struck out in his last three at-bats. The left fielder took advantage of the moment, though, giving Coastal Carolina its first lead since the second inning.

The Wildcats turned to right-hander Tony Pluta, but Barthol continued the damage, hitting a two-run double to right center.

❌ Zona escapes jam | Bot 7: COASTAL 4, ARIZONA 4

With zero outs and a runner on second, Coastal Carolina found itself in a similar position as the sixth inning where they scored a run.

The end result wasn't the same, though, as Arizona right-hander struck out both Colby Thorndyke and Garrett Hicks to get the Wildcats out of the jam.

Blake Barthol doubled down the right field, inches off the foul line, to start the inning and Walker Mitchell moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Arizona turned to Hicks after that, and he stopped the bleeding.

This is the first time in MCWS history that Game 1 has been tied after 7 innings in 3 straight seasons.

👀 WILDCATS TAKE FIRST LEAD | Top 6: ARIZONA 4, COASTAL 3

Following Coastal Carolina's run in the bottom half of the last inning, Arizona responded with two runs of its own and took its first lead of the game.

Chanticleers' right-hander Cameron Flukey hit center fielder Aaron Walton and Mason White to start the inning, while Adonys Guzman laid down his first career bunt to load the bases. Flukey then hit Maddox Mihalakis in the left foot, allowing his first run of the game and tying it at 3-3.

Garen Caulfield gave the Wildcats the lead with a fielder's choice groundout. With lead, Arizona has 12 wins this season after trailing in the fifth inning, the most in DI.

Flukey is the first pitcher to hit three batters in an inning of a MCWS game since Rice in 2003.
